Llorente’s WCup debut proves decisive for Spain (AP)

Fernando Llorente’s World Cup debut for Spain played a big part in turning around the team’s fortunes against Portugal. Llorente replaced the fading Fernando Torres in the 59th minute Tuesday, and his introduction changed the dynamic of Spain’s attack. Four minutes later, David Villa scored the goal that sent the European champions into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory.

Injured Elano to miss match against the Dutch (AP)

Elano will not play for Brazil in Friday’s World Cup quarterfinal match against the Netherlands because of a right ankle injury, a team doctor said Wednesday. Jose Luis Runco said Elano may be fit by next week but did not rule out the possibility that the playmaker could miss the rest of the World Cup.

Germany striker Lukas Podolski pulled out of Germany’s practice session Wednesday and returned to the hotel ahead of the team. Germany spokesman Uli Voigt said Podolski was not injured and was skipping training Wednesday as a “precautionary measure” ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina.
